O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol at the beginning of 2005 when she was a high school student. Judges loved her voice and she was able to advance into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked, and they recommended to the audience to choose Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the most impressive vocal abilities. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after an impressive string of performance. The judge Werner said, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner in her Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and the youngest contestant in history after the 7th September Finals of 2005. O'Neil was contacted right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
